Your workplace has a Sick Leave Policy, so why not a Period Policy?

Let’s stop pretending periods don’t impact work. Because they do.

From brain fog to backaches, migraines to mood crashes, heavy bleeding to endo flare-ups, menstrual health can have a serious impact on how we feel, function, and focus. And yet… most workplaces still treat periods like a personal inconvenience to be silently managed behind closed doors.

No leave options. No pads or tampons in bathrooms. No space for honest conversation.

But here’s the truth:

  • 1 in 5 women experience severe menstrual symptoms that affect their day-to-day.

  • Conditions like endometriosis or PMDD can be utterly debilitating, yet are still largely invisible, misunderstood, or brushed off.

  • Many women push through pain at work, afraid of being judged as weak, dramatic, or “less capable.”

Enough.

We’re not asking for sympathy - we’re asking for policy. Because supporting menstrual health in the workplace isn’t radical. It’s responsible. It’s smart. And it’s long overdue.

So, what does a Period Policy actually look like?

  • Flexible leave or work-from-home options for menstruation or menstrual-related health conditions.

  • Free access to menstrual products in bathrooms (just like toilet paper).

  • Education and training for staff and managers on menstrual health, inclusivity, and invisible illness.

  • Open dialogue that normalises, not stigmatises, the lived reality of periods.

Because guess what? Periods aren’t a problem. Silence is.

If we can design ergonomic chairs, hybrid working models, and nap pods for productivity, we can build policies that acknowledge basic biology.

Implementing a Period Policy is a powerful way to show women in your workforce that they’re not just expected to push through, they’re supported. Respected. Heard.

It’s not about making excuses. It’s about making space.

Let’s stop tiptoeing around the topic and start building workplaces where women can show up fully.
